OPPORTUNITY'S KNOCKING
by Jim Grootegoed, professional editor

I'm struck by the opportunities for labs contained in this edition of LABmail.

The VSP Unity award is given "...to an independent optical laboratory that demonstrates exceptional quality of work, exceeds Unity sales targets and provides superior customer service." This is a perfect example of what it takes to succeed in our industry. We all provide exceptional quality; technology has evened the playing field. Exceeding sales targets. Excuse me but, "duh!" The last qualifier, "...provides superior customer service..." is really where you can differentiate yourself. The upcoming July issue of OLP will offer information on what customer service really is and how labs train. Stay tuned.

VISION EASE and ZEISS are both introducing new, targeted, segment-centric lenses designed to both satisfy user needs as well as that long sought second pair sale. These have "opportunity" written all over them. Consider developing programs to help your customers position these needed additions to the dispenser's product arsenal.

DIGITAL EYE LAB NAMED VSP'S UNITY LAB OF THE YEAR
Pictured at the award presentation (l-r) are Stuart Kosh (VSP), Vincent Monaghan (Digital Eye Lab), Dave Delle Donne (VSP), Nan Meehan (ABB) and Maria Varga (Arc of Westchester).
Digital Eye Lab, a division of ABB Optical Group, has been named VSP Optics Group's Unity Independent Lab of the Year for 2016. The award is presented annually to an independent optical laboratory that demonstrates exceptional quality of work, exceeds Unity sales targets and provides superior customer service in its first full year as a Unity-enabled laboratory. Digital Eye Lab first began manufacturing Unity lenses in mid-2015.

In recognition of the honor, VSP Optics Group donated $2,500 on behalf of Digital Eye Lab to the Arc of Westchester Foundation, which supports children, teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing programs to foster independence, productivity and participation in community life. Arc of Westchester recently honored Digital Eye Lab with its New Business Partner Award for hiring employees through the organization and for promoting a diverse workplace.

LUXEXCEL SECURES EQUITY FINANCING
Belgium-based Luxexcel, which developed a technology to 3D print ophthalmic lenses, announced last month it received $10 million in equity financing from both financial and strategic investors. According to the company, Luxexcel is currently preparing to globally ship its 3D printing platform to ophthalmic labs in the second half of this year. The platform, introduced at Vision Expo East, includes industrial-grade 3D printers, lens design software and workflow integration tools.

CERIUM OPTICAL FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN PASSES
Clive Sangster, founder and chairman of U.K.-based Cerium Optical Products, has passed away. Established in 1972, Cerium manufactures and exports consumables such as polish, edging pads, and lens protection tape and operates offices in the U.S., Australia, Singapore, Cyprus as well as the U.K. In 1993, the British Medical Research Council approached Sangster to manufacture and market the Intuitive Colorimeter, an instrument that allows prescribing of precision tinted lenses to treat visual stress in poor readers or those who suffer from neurological conditions, which led to the formation of Cerium Visual Technologies.

A member of the Worshipful Company of Spectaclemakers, Sangster received many awards throughout his career, including the Queens Award for Industry in 1986 and was granted the Freedom of the City of London. Sangster is survived by his wife, Lyn, five children and nine grandchildren. Sangster's son James will continue to run Cerium Optical Products while daughter Kimberley will head Cerium Visual Technologies.

NEW TASK-SPECIFIC DIGITAL LENSES FROM VISION EASE
VISION EASE has introduced a new line of digital backside occupational lenses designed with office ergonomics in mind for optimal viewing zones during specific tasks. VISION EASE Computer lenses maximize the wearer's viewing zone for tasks closer than 6 ft., such as reading, handwork or focusing on devices and computers. VISION EASE Desk lenses are a versatile option for wearers who need roomy near and intermediate zones up to 12 ft. to view screens and engage with others near their desks. VISION EASE Office lenses offer improved vision over general-purpose progressives for viewing ranges up to 20 ft. These lenses enhance near and intermediate vision as a wearer moves from meetings to computer throughout the day. (Distances vary depending on individual prescription and accommodation.) For more information, contact VISION EASE at 800.328.3449 or VISIONEASE.com.

LENS PRO TRACTION CONTROL FROM DYNAMIC LABS
Dynamic Labs' Lens Pro Traction Control eliminates blocking pad slippage on super hydrophobic lenses. Lenses are ready to block and edge after applying one to two sprays to coated lenses and allowing to dry for 30 to 60 seconds. Lens Pro is easily removed by spraying with Eliminator and wiping with a lens cloth. Lens Pro is available in two sizes: 25 ml and 100 ml. For more information, contact Dynamic Labs at 888.339.6264 or DynamicLabs.net.

SPECTACLE LENSES FROM ZEISS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR CONTACT LENS WEARERS
ZEISS EnergizeMe eyeglass lenses are designed for the specific needs of contact lens wearers, who often keep their lenses in for extended periods of time, causing them to experience eyestrain and fatigue. ZEISS EnergizeMe Lenses are a unique combination of a new lens design with Digital Inside Technology and DuraVision BlueProtect coating for optimum comfort and protection from digital eyestrain and blue light, according to the company. Three EnergizeMe lens options are available to meet the vision needs of virtually any contact lens wearer: ZEISS EnergizeMe Single Vision Lenses, ZEISS EnergizeMe Digital Lenses and ZEISS EnergizeMe Progressive Lenses. For more information, contact ZEISS at 800.358.8258 or ZEISS.com/EnergizeMe.
